Apocalypse Harvey

Hurricane, flooding, gales, tornadoes… fire ants… what’s not to love?

Our house did not flood, since we are not in a flood prone area and are a fair way north of the coast. Although I went to bed on Sunday night, thinking our lower floor, which is not much higher than street level, might flood. It didn’t, though the street was covered in water, as were the footpaths (sidewalks) and the rain came down all night.

Then I find out about this

When there is flooding along the Gulf Coast, there are fire ants. The invasive ants congregate into living rafts, drifting through water until they reach solid ground again. It’s a time-honed survival strategy.

But when there is Hurricane Harvey-level flooding, there are not just small rafts but huge, dense mats of fire ants.

Harvey is due to return tomorrow for another bout, this time mostly wind. Joy.
